The American Consulate is at the same time the Peruvian Consulate. Over the door- way leading to the reception chamber were the English and American flags. General Grant is a man in appearance

Į about fifty years of age, although actually seven years older, having been born in 1822, 37th April. He looks uncommonly fresh in spite of the tear and wear of War's alarms, and the worrying and trying boredom of being Honized as he has been for the past six months or more. He is rather under than over the average size, has a fresh ruddy face, and brown bair of a grayish bue. He is evidently a man of most unasauzning man- ners and most dogged resolution, and when ho geté into his favourite attitude, crossing his knees and leaning slightly forward, with his cigar in his hand, he recalls to one's recollection the five or six hundred portraits we have all ssun of him, either during the war or the term of ble double presidency.

În conversation he is a willing participator,

and talks genially and pleasantly.
